Keep an eye on Spencer Howard at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The right-hander struck out eight and allowed two hits and one run in four innings on Sunday afternoon against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Howard is the No. 32 prospect in baseball and the Phillies’ top prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

Keep an eye on him because Phillies right-hander Chase Anderson allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings in Sunday’s 10-8 loss to the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla. Anderson has a 6.96 ERA over eight starts and has pitched five or fewer innings in each, which is tied for the second-longest single-season streak by a Phillies starter since 1901. Vince Velasquez had a nine-start streak of five or fewer innings from Aug. 8 – Sept. 25, 2018, according to Baseball Reference.

“That’s totally out of my control,” Anderson said about his spot in the rotation. “I’m glad Spencer is pitching well. He’s a great pitcher, a friend of mine. Obviously, I got to know him in Spring Training. But my job is to give this team a chance to win every five days. And I’ve done that in recent starts. It’s just that today wasn’t that day.”

The Phillies had won each of Anderson’s previous three starts. He had a 3.77 ERA in that stretch, allowing six earned runs in 14 1/3 innings.

But the Phillies are building up Howard’s arm strength for a potential return to the rotation eventually. In nine innings across three starts with the IronPigs, Howard has allowed one run on three hits and five walks. He has struck out 13.
