Phillies amateur scout Mike Stauffer has been selected as the 2019 recipient of the Dallas Green Award, the club announced today.

Stauffer, whose coverage includes Missouri, Louisiana, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle, joined the Phillies in 2001 after spending time coaching at Iowa Western Community College and has been scouting in the southeast for the last 19 years.

Stauffer’s impact can be seen on the current Phillies roster. He most notably signed right-handed pitcher Aaron Nola, who finished third in Cy Young Award voting last year and has 200 strikeouts in consecutive seasons, in 2014 out of Louisiana State University. He was also responsible for the signing of reliever Adam Morgan in 2011 and left-hander Will Stewart, who helped the Phillies land All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto in a trade with Miami, in 2015.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to receive this award from the Phillies,” Stauffer said. “To be able to represent what Dallas Green stood for, knowing how much he meant to this city, means so much to me.”

The 2019 Dallas Green Award will be presented on the field today, Tuesday, Sept. 10, prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the Atlanta Braves. The award was established in 2011 to honor the accomplishments of Green, who spent 62 years in professional baseball, 46 of which were with the Phillies. Green passed away in March 2017 at the age of 82.

The award is presented annually to an amateur or professional scout who best exemplifies the Phillies’ standard for scouting while demonstrating the same loyalty, work ethic, dedication and passion as the award’s namesake. It is also recognition of the scout’s ability to judge not only a player’s talent, but also his character and heart.

Past winners of the Dallas Green Award have been Dick Lawlor (2011), Bill Harper (2012), Eddie Bockman (2013), Gordon Lakey (2014), Sal Agostinelli (2015), Roy Tanner (2016), Joey Davis (2017) and Jesús “Chalao” Méndez (2018).
