The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. This year, the Pirates nominee is Jacob Stallings.
Celebrate Clemente Day with the Pirates!
All Pirates Players & Coaches wore #21 jerseys to honor The Great One! Jerseys will be made available for auction HERE in the days following the game, with proceeds benefiting the Clemente Foundation & Pirates Charities.
There was a special pregame ceremony featuring members of the Clemente family on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. There was also a very special Roberto Clemente exhibit on display in the Jim Beam Left Field Lounge; the exhibit was on display in partnership with the Pittsburgh-based Clemente Museum.
In the spirit of Clemente's community service legacy, the Pirates front office will take part in two service projects around the city as the team continues to give back in a meaningful manner.
Representatives of the Club will start the day in the Beechview neighborhood and take part in a field renovation and winterization event at Brashear High School. The Pirates front office staff will help with some much-needed improvements to the Brashear High School baseball and softball diamonds. The work will include upgrades to the infield, rebuilding the pitching mounds, painting of the dugouts and more.
In the city's Hazelwood neighborhood, members of the front office will partner with the Mission Continues’ Hazelwood Platoon at the involveMINT Food Recycling Center. The project will include a refresh of the Center as well as the building of a supply shed donated by Pirates Charities. The Mission Continues is a nonprofit that empowers veterans to help underserved communities bring a network of veterans to serve those communities. The involveMINT group is a nonprofit that documents, recognizes, and values the un(der)paid work and resources that are essential for communities to become healthy, sustainable, and resilient. Both local nonprofits work throughout the year to serve the Pittsburgh community.
