ROBERTO CLEMENTE DAY

Roberto Clemente Day

Roberto Clemente Day was established by Major League Baseball to honor the life and legacy of Pirates great, Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Each year, teams across the league honor his memory by giving back to their communities.

CLEMENTE DAY OF SERVICE

To honor the life and legacy of Roberto Clemente, the Pittsburgh Pirates front office staff, players and coaches volunteered at five service projects throughout the city of Pittsburgh for the Pirates annual Clemente Day of Service presented by FedEx. Each of the four Pirates Charities pillars ā€“ youth baseball and softball, cancer support, military appreciation and mental health ā€“ were represented with a project, in addition to a fifth that supported Pittsburgh's Latino Community Center.

To grow the game of baseball, Pirates volunteers were joined by staff from Duquesne Light Company to renovate a field home to hundreds of South Side RBI athletes. Volunteers with a focus on mental health awareness replenished donations and prepared meals for the residents and survivors served by the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile at PNC Park, over 300 care packages of food, hygiene products, games, and activities were assembled by Pirates and Calgon Carbon volunteers, which will be sent to troops overseas with the help of Operation Troop Appreciation. To celebrate the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, Pirates and FedEx volunteers spent time at the Latino Community Center restocking their food pantry, providing activities for their after-school program and building lunch packs for any of their kids facing food insecurity.

Pirates President Travis Williams and two-time Clemente Award Nominee, David Bednar, joined Pirates volunteers at the Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute serving breakfast to Cancer Institute staff, courtesy of Giant Eagle, and delivering comfort items to patients of the Glimmer of Hope Metastatic Breast Cancer Center.

Throughout the day, nearly 150 Pirates Front Office volunteers and 36 active players and coaches and their families took part in this day of service, giving back to the Pittsburgh community.
