LOUIS -- Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen was removed from Saturday's game against the Cardinals with soreness in his left wrist that he sustained on a diving catch in the third inning. X-rays showed that McCutchen suffered a sprained left wrist.
McCutchen sat out the series finale in St. Louis on Sunday.
McCutchen charged in on a low line drive hit to shallow center field by Carlos Beltran in the third. McCutchen laid flat out in front of him to make the catch. McCutchen laid on the field for a few extra moments after the catch, then walked in from the outfield slowly.
"It got tight, just not normal," McCutchen said after the game. "So I wanted to make sure it was all right after that."
McCutchen swung awkwardly on an inside pitch in the fifth, laying his bat down and walking away from the plate for a few minutes. A trainer and Hurdle came out to talk with McCutchen, who stayed in and grounded out to third.
McCutchen was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two singles before exiting the game in the seventh.
McCutchen's aggressive play in center has caused him some injuries in the past. He suffered a mildly sprained AC joint in his right shoulder while diving for a ball in a game against Houston on May 25 in Pittsburgh.
Still, both McCutchen and Hurdle agree that McCutchen shouldn't hold back while roaming center.
"I've seen it all happen," Hurdle said. "But I just wait until they get up or they don't get up and then you go accordingly. You're always hoping they don't get hurt and they do get up. But as far as that, I want him to play the game and that's what he does."
"You dive for balls you can get," McCutchen said. "I get balls I can get. I know my limitations. I know what I can and can't get. If it feels like I can dive for it, I dive for it and get it. That's part of the game, just trying to go out and play the game hard."
Hurdle said he anticipated giving McCutchen the day off on Sunday before McCutchen's sprained his wrist. But McCutchen had other ideas.
"Yeah, right," McCutchen joked. "That wouldn't have happened. I don't get days off. ... I'm not trying to get a day off. I get days off in the offseason."
