Marte scratched from lineup with bruised hand

SAN DIEGO -- After Starling Marte sat out Monday night's game with a new contusion to his right hand, the Pirates hoped to get their leadoff hitter back for Tuesday night's rematch with the Padres.

Manager Clint Hurdle went so far as including Marte in his original starting lineup. But that had to be changed after the left fielder tested the hand in early workouts at Petco Park, and the hand didn't pass.

"Still sore," a dejected Marte said, holding up his right ring and little fingers. "Tried throwing and gripping a bat. Not good. Maybe later in the game, off the bench."

Jose Tabata replaced Marte, both in left field and atop the order.

This is not a recurrence of the bruise -- the result of being hit by a pitch -- that caused Marte to miss two starts a week ago. This resulted from having his hand stepped on by Arizona's Martin Prado as he tried to steal third base in the eighth inning of Sunday's game at PNC Park.
