The Pirates have acquired infielder Adeiny Hechavarria (a-DAIN-ee etch-ah-vah-REE-yah) and cash considerations from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for RHP Matt Seelinger.
Prior to being designated for assignment on August 1, Hechavarria hit .258 (56-for-217) with three home runs and 26 RBI in 61 games with the Rays this season, making 61 appearances (57 starts) at shortstop. On June 30 vs. Houston, he snapped his errorless streak at 94 games (319 total chances) - both the longest such streaks in franchise history for a shortstop.
Entering today, the 29-year-old Hechavarria ranks fifth in the Major Leagues with 734 games played at shortstop since 2013. He was a National League Gold Glove finalist at shortstop in both 2014 and 2015. In addition, his 35 triples since 2013 rank tied for third among all Major League players, trailing only Dee Gordon (40) and Charlie Blackmon (37).
Hechavarria made his Major League debut with Toronto in 2012 before spending the next four years (2013-2016) as the starting shortstop for the Miami Marlins. He was traded to the Rays on 6/26/17.
