Pirates sign Minor League free agent Nick Evans

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the signing of minor league free agent first baseman/outfielder Nick Evans, which includes an invitation to spring training.

The 25-year-old Evans split the 2011 season between Triple-A Buffalo and the New York Mets. He made 45 appearances at first base, eight in right field, two at third base and one in left field with the Mets while batting .256 (45-for-176) with 10 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBI in 59 total games.

Originally selected by New York in the fifth round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, Evans was an Eastern League All-Star in 2008 and was selected as the organization’s Co-Player of the Year after hitting .311 with 14 homers and 53 RBI in 75 games with Binghamton. He also made his Major League debut with the Mets in 2008 and batted .257 with 10 doubles, two homers and nine RBI in 50 games with the big league club.

Evans has spent parts of the last four seasons in the Major Leagues with the Mets and has produced a .256 batting average, 28 doubles, eight home runs and 46 RBI in 159 games.
