The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired infielder Michael Chavis from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Austin Davis.

The 25-year-old Chavis has hit .234 (134-for-572) with 19 doubles, four triples, 25 home runs and 83 RBI in 168 career games with Boston since being selected by the Red Sox with the 26th overall pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft.

The right-handed hitting Chavis has split the 2021 season between Boston and Worcester of the Triple-A East League. He has made a total of 22 appearances (14 starts) at second base and eight appearances (five starts) at first base while hitting .190 (15-for-79) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and six RBI in 31 games with the Red Sox.

Chavis, who entered the 2019 season ranked by Baseball America as Boston's No. 2 prospect, hit .254 (88-for-347) with 10 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs and 58 RBI in 95 games during his rookie season with the Red Sox. He hit a total of 20 home runs during his first 103 games in the big leagues, which was the sixth-fewest needed to reach that mark in Red Sox history.

The 25-year-old Chavis also needed a total of just 28 games to record 10 home runs and 25 RBI, which were the 11th-fewest needed in big league history. He was named the Red Sox 2019 Rookie-of-the-Year by the Boston Baseball Writers Association while his 18 home runs and 58 RBI in 95 games were both the most by a Red Sox player in their debut season since Ellis Burks had 20 homers and 59 RBI in 133 games in 1987.

Chavis led all Red Sox minor leaguers in home runs in both 2015 (16) and 2017 (tied with 31) while hitting a total of 47 home runs in just 193 minor league games from 2017-19.
