Pirates recall right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo and outfielder Cal Mitchell from Triple-A Indianapolis

The Pittsburgh Pirates today recalled right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo and outfielder Cal Mitchell from Triple-A Indianapolis.

The 24-year-old Oviedo recorded a 0.79 ERA (11.1ip/1er), 13 strikeouts, .195 batting average against and 0.97 WHIP in five appearances (four starts) with Triple-A Indianapolis after being acquired from the Cardinals organization along with third baseman/first baseman Malcom Nuñez last month.

Oviedo, who will start tomorrow night against Toronto, began the 2022 season with Triple-A Memphis before being recalled by St. Louis on June 3. Oviedo went 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA (25.1ip/9er), seven walks allowed and 26 strikeouts in 14 appearances (one start) this year for the Cardinals. In 13 relief appearances this season with St. Louis, he went 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA (20.1ip/6er), 21 strikeouts and a 1.08 WHIP.

Oviedo will wear uniform #62.

The 23-year-old Mitchell was hitting .339 (80-for-236) with 18 doubles, two triples, nine home runs, 49 RBI and a .938 OPS in 63 games with Indianapolis at the time he was promoted back to the Pirates.

Last month, Mitchell hit .375 (24-for-64) with four doubles, two triples, four home runs, 14 RBI, a .438 OBP, .688 slugging percentage and 1.126 OPS in 17 games at the Triple-A level. He ranked third among all qualified hitters in the International League last month in batting, second in OPS, fourth in slugging and fifth in OBP.

In addition to Oviedo starting tomorrow night’s game, right-handed pitcher Roansy Contreras will start Saturday night while righthander JT Brubaker will start the series finale on Sunday for the 12:05 p.m. first pitch on Peacock.
