Pirates set to celebrate Roberto Clemente Day

Team to honor Roberto Clemente with Day of Giving, On-Field Recognition and More

September 14th, 2021

As the Pittsburgh Pirates continue to honor the life and legacy of the great Roberto Clemente, the Club will join Major League Baseball in a Roberto Clemente Day celebration on Wednesday, September 15. The Pirates will honor “The Great One” with a day of giving, a community-based initiative taking place throughout Pittsburgh, as well as several pregame and on-field events.

On this 20th annual Roberto Clemente Day, MLB has also announced that September 15th – which is the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month – will be celebrated as Roberto Clemente Day in perpetuity.

In the spirit of Clemente’s community service legacy, the Pirates front office will take part in two service projects around the city as the team continues to give back in a meaningful manner with improvement projects at a local high school as well as a nonprofit partner.

Representatives of the Club will start the day in the Beechview neighborhood and take part in a field renovation and winterization event at Brashear High School. From 9 a.m. to noon, the Pirates front office staff will help with some much-needed improvements to the Brashear High School baseball and softball diamonds. The work will include upgrades to the infield, rebuilding the pitching mounds, painting of the dugouts and more.

Meanwhile, in the city’s Hazelwood neighborhood, members of the front office will partner with the Mission Continues’ Hazelwood Platoon from 9 a.m. to noon at the involveMINT Food Recycling Center. The project will include a refresh of the Center as well as the building of a supply shed donated to the site by Pirates Charities.

The Mission Continues is a nonprofit that empowers veterans to help underserved communities bring a network of veterans to serve those communities. The involveMINT group is a nonprofit that documents, recognizes, and values the un(der)paid work and resources that are essential for communities to become healthy, sustainable, and resilient. Both local nonprofits work throughout the year to serve the Pittsburgh community.

In addition to the community-based initiatives, the Pirates will honor the life and legacy of the great Roberto Clemente at PNC Park. For the second consecutive season, the Pirates, in coordination with Major League Baseball, will honor “The Great One” on the field as all players and coaches will wear Clemente’s jersey number 21. The number 21 will grace the back of each of the Pirates’ home white Nike jerseys for the game.

In the days following the game, the jerseys will be placed for auction on pirates.com/auctions as fans will have a chance to bid on the game-worn jerseys. All proceeds from the sale of the jerseys will benefit the Clemente Foundation and Pirates Charities.

The number 21 will be etched in the grass in right field, the position Clemente played for the Pirates for 18 seasons. Also, in a pregame on-field ceremony, Jacob Stallings will receive the Pirates Roberto Clemente Award from Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting as well as the Clemente Family.

Throughout the game fans are encouraged to visit a very special Roberto Clemente exhibit that will be on display in the Jim Beam Left Field Lounge. The exhibit is on display in partnership with the Pittsburgh-based Roberto Clemente Museum.

Finally, as a nod to Clemente’s continued efforts to make baseball accessible and available to all fans, the Pirates will host over 500 guests from the Watson Institute for a night at the ballpark. The Watson Institute is an educational organization in Western Pennsylvania made up of special education schools, programs, and resources for children with special needs and their families. Families served by the Institute are not always able to attend Pirates games due to sensory sensitivities. Prior to the 2021 season, the Pirates unveiled the Sensory Room on the Suite Level at PNC Park to accommodate those with these needs. The Sensory Room is a quiet and safe space to help relieve sensory overload but keep fans with sensory sensitivities a part of the game day experience.

To ensure all fans are able to attend and celebrate one of the most special days of the year, the Pirates are offering a special value ticket package of two tickets for just $21 for the 6:35 p.m. game vs the Cincinnati Reds at pirates.com/ClementeDay
