Today, Pirates Charities joined with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Pittsburgh’s Citiparks, local partner Eat’n Park and others at the Paulsen Recreation Center to distribute boxed lunches, provided by Eat’n Park in partnership with the United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh city school children. The event is part of the Pittsburgh Citipark’s Grab-and-Go program, which provides free lunches to city school children at five locations on weekdays.

Pirates Bench Coach, and Pittsburgh native, Don Kelly was on-hand at the event to volunteer with Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Chief Scott Schubert.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police distributed specially designed baseball cards as part of the 2020 Pirates Charities Pittsburgh Police Baseball Card Program. In addition, masks were made available as part of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police’s “Need a Mask, Take a Mask” initiative, a program assisting Pittsburgh residents to obtain free face masks if they do not have them.

Earlier this month, Pirates Charities, in partnership with the Topps Company, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Officers, announced the launch of the 2020 Pirates Charities Pittsburgh Police Baseball Card Program. The unique program features Pirates players and City of Pittsburgh Police officers on six trading cards used to encourage positive youth behavior.

The cards were specially designed by Topps and given to Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Officers to distribute to youth throughout the summer as a reward and incentive for positive actions and attitude. The program dates back to 2012, with Pirates Charities providing the funding to print thousands of cards each year. This year, the Pirates’ philanthropic arm also worked with Topps, the leading producer of American sports trading cards, on the individual design.

There are six baseball cards in all, each featuring a different Pirates player and a different officer. The front of the cards features an action shot of Pirates Chris Archer, Josh Bell, Adam Frazier, Keone Kela, Bryan Reynolds and Trevor Williams. The back of each card features one City of Pittsburgh Police officer with a quote from Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
