A’s medical update on Jesus Luzardo

July 4th, 2019

OAKLAND -- The Oakland A’s announced the following medical update on Minor League left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo:

Luzardo, 21, was removed from the game after four innings pitched last night in Las Vegas with tightness in his left latissimus dorsi muscle. Dr. Bernard Ong did the clinical examination and reviewed the MRI in Las Vegas, which revealed a Grade 2 latissimus dorsi muscle strain at the origin. There is no timetable for his return.

The current injury is unrelated to the supraspinatus muscle strain he suffered on March 18 during spring training.

Luzardo made his season debut with High-A Stockton, making two starts and going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) before being transferred to Triple-A Las Vegas. With the Aviators, he made three starts, going 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA (5 ER, 12.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts.

The left-hander entered the 2019 season as the No. 7 ranked prospect by Baseball America.

In three minor league seasons, he is 14-6 with a 2.56 ERA (49 ER, 172.0 IP) with 202 strikeouts in 40 career games, including 37 starts. He was acquired by Oakland from Washington on July 16, 2017, along with Blake Treinen and Sheldon Neuse, in exchange for Sean Doolittle and Ryan Madson.
