A's and Energy Upgrade California to power down video screens for Earth Day

Team plans to host energy-efficient national anthem

April 22nd, 2019

The Oakland A’s, in partnership with Energy Upgrade California, will reduce ballpark energy by powering down the video screens, LED boards, and microphones during today’s national anthem. Fans will be encouraged to sing the anthem together as part of the Earth Day celebrations.

“Oakland is our home, and we want to make sure we are doing our part to protect and preserve our environment,” said A’s COO Chris Giles. “We are proud to team up with Energy Upgrade California to celebrate Earth Day and have one of the most energy efficient national anthems in baseball.”

“Being a native Californian I couldn’t be more excited that my passions are coming together at the Coliseum on Earth Day. California has always had a special place in my heart, especially the Bay Area and all its natural beauty, so it’s important that we do what we can to keep it golden,” said Barry Zito, famed Oakland A’s pitcher and spokesperson for Energy Upgrade California. “Whether you are a fan of baseball, music, or the environment, when we all save energy in little ways, we can make a huge impact on the Golden State.”

The A’s are committed to a strong environmental agenda today and in the future. The Club recently announced their environmental plans for their new Howard Terminal ballpark at Jack London Square, which includes commitments such as: LEED Gold standards; net GHG neutrality; new waterfront access; environmental justice for West Oakland; and measures to improve air quality.
