Colorado Rockies select third baseman Aaron Schunk in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft

Right-handed pitcher Karl Kauffmann (Michigan) selected in competitive balance round B

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – With their second-round pick (62nd overall) over the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected third baseman Aaron Schunk out of the University of Georgia. Additionally, with the 77th overall pick in the competitive balance B round, the Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Karl Kauffmann out of the University of Michigan.

Schunk, a right-handed hitting junior batted .336 (76-for-226) with 47 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs, 52 RBI, 13 walks, three stolen bases and 28 strikeouts for the Bulldogs, who were eliminated from the NCAA Regionals yesterday.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound native of Atlanta also made 17 relief appearances as a closer for Georgia, going 1-2 with 12 saves and 2.49 ERA (21.2 IP, 6 ER), 17 walks and 18 strikeouts. Made one pitching appearance his freshman year in 2017 prior to transitioning to a two-way player in 2018.

Kauffmann, a junior, was named a Third Team All-Big 10 for the second consecutive year in 2019. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native made 16 starts and one relief appearance for Michigan in 2019, going 9-6 with a 2.62 ERA (106.1 IP, 31 ER), 28 walks and 93 strikeouts.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound righty was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after pitching eight shutout innings against Rutgers on April 26, allowing two hits and one walk with five strikeouts in the game. Made his one relief appearance on March 27 and earned a save, the first and only of his college career.

The Rockies had three selections on the first day of MLB’s annual amateur draft. In addition to Schunk and Kauffman, also selected first baseman Michael Toglia in the first round (23rd overall) out of UCLA.

The draft will continue Tuesday with rounds three through 10, and will conclude Wednesday with rounds 11-40.
