Lorenzo Cain earns Play of the Week for second time in 2019

April 29th, 2019

Infielder Eduardo Escobar of the Arizona Diamondbacks has been named the W.B. Mason National League Player of the Week, and first baseman Luke Voit of the New York Yankees has been named the W.B. Mason American League Player of the Week. The announcements were made earlier today on MLB Network.

Escobar claimed his second career Player of the Week Award, and his first in the NL, previously winning AL Player of the Week while a member of the Minnesota Twins last year (June 10th). Voit earned his second career AL Player of the Week Award, previously winning for the week ending October 1, 2018, and has now earned the Yankees’ two most recent honors.

Eduardo Escobar, Arizona Diamondbacks (@eduardoescobar5)

• Batted .480 (12-for-25) with eight runs scored, three doubles, a triple, three home runs, eight RBI, three walks and a 1.040 slugging percentage across six games played.

• Among NL leaders, finished first in batting average, hits and total bases (26); tied for first in home runs, extra-base hits (7) and runs scored; tied for second in RBI; and second in slugging percentage.

• Set a career best with three consecutive three-hit games from April 22nd-24th, becoming the sixth different player in franchise history to accomplish the feat, and the first since Paul Goldschmidt established the franchise record with four such games last season (June 5th-9th).

• Clubbed a pair of home runs in yesterday’s game against the Chicago Cubs, and now has five round-trippers on the season. Enters play today with what would be a personal-best .286/.367/.514 slash line.

Luke Voit, New York Yankees (@lukevoit)

• Posted a slash line of .433/.528/.867 with 10 runs scored, 13 hits, a double, four home runs, 10 RBI and five walks over seven games played, leading the Yankees to a 6-1 record.

• Finished the period first in hits, runs scored and total bases (26); tied for first in home runs; second in RBI and on-base percentage; and tied for second in extra-base hits among qualified AL sluggers.

• Recorded his first multi-home run game of the season on Tuesday, and the third of his career, most recently accomplishing the feat on September 19th of last season. Became the fifth different Yankees player with a multi-homer game in 2019, joining Clint Frazier, Aaron Judge, Gary Sánchez and Gleyber Torres.

• Enters play today in the midst of a 28-game on-base streak dating back to Opening Day, which is tied with Willie Randolph for the eighth-longest streak to begin a season in franchise history. His streak is the longest since Derek Jeter’s Club record-53 straight games to begin the 1999 campaign.

Other noteworthy NL performances last week included All-Star outfielder Cody Bellinger (.444, 2 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI) of the Los Angeles Dodgers; starting pitcher Steven Matz (2-0, 2.08 ERA, 13.0 IP, 10 SO) of the New York Mets; closer Kirby Yates (3 G, 3 SV, 0.00 ERA, 4 SO) of the San Diego Padres; starting pitcher Jack Flaherty (2-0, 2.77 ERA, 13.0 IP, 14 SO) of the St. Louis Cardinals; All-Stars Nolan Arenado (.346, 4 2B, 3 HR, 8 RBI) and Trevor Story (.400, 8 R, 7 XBH, 5 RBI) of the Colorado Rockies; and starting pitcher Zach Eflin (1-1, 2.77 ERA, 13.0 IP, 1 CG) of the Philadelphia Phillies.

PLAY OF THE WEEK

Two-time All-Star outfielder Lorenzo Cain became the first Major Leaguer to earn multiple Play of the Week honors in 2019, previously doing so for this season’s Opening Week. In the bottom of the second inning of Friday night’s game at Citi Field, Cain ranged back to deep right-center field, jumped and reached over the wall to rob Todd Frazier of the New York Mets of a home run. Additional Play of the Week candidates included shortstop Brandon Crawford’s behind-the-back flip to the second baseman to retire the lead runner; Jurickson Profar’s diving snag at second base to prevent a base hit from Brandon Drury; Chad Pinder’s leaping catch at the wall to rob Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of his first career hit on Friday night; Mike Trout’s acrobatic catch in center field, which led to an unconventional double play with his teammate Andrelton Simmons; and Nick Williams’ tremendous throw from left field to retire Miguel Rojas in a tie game in the top of the ninth inning.
