D-backs recall Duplantier from Triple-A, designate Koch for assignment

PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled RHP Jon Duplantier (@dup_thereitis) from Triple-A Reno and designated RHP Matt Koch for assignment.

Duplantier (pronounced: doo-PLON-tee-AY), 24, is in his second stint with the D-backs this season, having made 2 scoreless appearances (4.0 IP) with a save and 3 strikeouts. He made his Major League debut on April 1 @ Padres and earned a 3.0-inning save, becoming the second D-back to earn a save in his first career game (also: Byung-Hyun Kim on May 29, 1999 @ Mets), and the first pitcher to record a 3.0+ inning save in his debut since the Rays’ Dale Thayer on May 22, 2009.

In 3 starts with Reno this season, Duplantier has gone 0-1 with a 1.04 ERA (1 ER in 8.2 IP), .111 opponent average and 10 strikeouts, and has limited left-handed hitters to a .100 average (1-for-10). He entered this season rated as Arizona’s No. 2 prospect by both MLB.com and Baseball America, as well as earning a Top 100 overall ranking by both publications (No. 72 by MLB.com; No. 84 by Baseball America).

Duplantier spent the 2018 season with Double-A Jackson, going 5-1 with a 2.69 ERA (20 ER in 67.0 IP), a .217 opponent average and 68 strikeouts in 14 starts. Following the season, he made 6 starts for Salt River at the Arizona Fall League, going 1-1 with a 3.32 ERA (8 ER in 21.2 IP) with 32 strikeouts.

In 2017, Duplantier was named the D-backs’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, MLB Pipeline’s Pitcher of the Year and selected to _Baseball America_’s First-Team Minor League All-Star Team after he went 12-3 with a 1.39 ERA (21 ER in 136.0 IP), a .192 opponent average and 165 strikeouts in 25 games (24 starts) between Single-A Kane County and Single-A Adv. Visalia. His ERA that season was the second lowest by a Minor Leaguer in the last 25 years, behind only Justin Verlander’s 1.29 ERA (17 ER in 118.2 IP) in 2005. He also pitched for Team USA in the 2017 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game at Marlins Park (1 ER in 0.2 IP).  

Duplantier has gone 17-5 with a 1.76 ERA (43 ER in 219.2 IP), a .196 opponent average and 255 strikeouts in 45 games (43 starts) over parts of 4 seasons (2016-19) in the D-backs’ system. The 6-foot-4, 240-pounder was selected by Arizona in the third round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Rice University.

Koch, 28, posted a 9.15 ERA (21 ER in 20.2 IP) with 9 strikeouts and 4 walks in 9 relief appearances for Arizona this season.
