Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto today announced that the Mariners have acquired infielder Yonder Alonso from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league outfielder Boog Powell.
 
Alonso, 30, was hitting .266 (85x319) with 52 runs, 17 doubles, 22 home runs, 49 RBI, a .369 on-base percentage, .527 slugging mark and a .896 OPS in 100 games with Oakland. The 2017 American League All Star has set career highs in home runs, on-base percentage, slugging and OPS. Among American League first basemen, his .527 slugging mark ranks 2nd, while his 22 homers and .369 on-base mark rank 3rd.
 
Against right-handed pitching this season, he's hitting .286 (73x255) with 15 doubles, 18 home runs, 40 RBI, a .391 on-base percentage, .557 slugging and .948 OPS. In his career against righties, he's hit .277 (527x1900) with 116 doubles, 2 triples, 51 home runs, 222 RBI with a .769 OPS.
 
In parts of eight Major League seasons with Cincinnati (2010-11), San Diego (2012-15) and Oakland (2016-17), he has combined to hit .269 (650x2419) with 272 runs, 144 doubles, 2 triples, 61 home runs, 288 RBI and a .339 on-base percentage in 762 games. He was drafted by Cincinnati in the 1st round (7th overall) in the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Miami (FL).
 
Powell, 24, hit .194 (7x36) with 6 runs scored, 2 RBI and 6 walks in 23 games over three stints with Seattle this season (4/29-5/4, 5/16-6/10 & 7/2-17). He was recalled by Seattle on April 29, made his Major League debut the same day at Cleveland as a pinch hitter, but did not record a plate appearance. Powell spent the majority of the season with AAA Tacoma, batting .340 (70x206) with 46 runs, 9 doubles, 2 triples, 6 home runs, 33 RBI, 28 walks and 11 stolen bases in 58 games with the Rainiers.
 
The 5-foot-10, 185-pound outfielder was originally acquired by the Mariners along with RHP Nathan Karns and LHP C.J. Riefenhauser from Tampa Bay for RHP Danny Farquhar, INF Brad Miller and INF Logan Morrison on Nov. 5, 2015. In parts of 6 minor leagues seasons in the Athletics (2012-14), Rays (2015) and Mariners organizations (2016-c), Powell is a career .306 (470x1536) hitter with 255 runs, 52 doubles, 21 triples, 15 home runs, 155 RBI, 74 steals and a .391 on-base percentage in 414 career minor league games. The native of Irvine, Calif., was originally selected by Oakland in the 20th round of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Orange Coast College.
