TORONTO, Ontario, Canada -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:
• Dan Altavilla, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
• Ryan Weber, RHP, placed on 10-day disabled list with a right biceps strain.
Altavilla (#53) will be in uniform and available for today's (10:07 am PT) game at the Toronto Blue Jays.
Altavilla, 24 (turns 25 on Sept. 8), was optioned to AAA Tacoma on May 11 but did not appear in a minor league game before being recalled due to an injury to right-hander Ryan Weber. In his most recent stint with Seattle, he appeared in 3 games with the Mariners after being recalled from AAA Tacoma on May 6, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits (1 home run) and 1 walk while striking out 4 in 3.0 innings of work over 3 outings. Overall, he is 1-1 with a 6.97 ERA (8 ER, 10.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts and 7 walks in 12 games with the Mariners this season. Altavilla was named to his first career Opening Day roster on April 2 and went 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA (6 ER, 7.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and 6 walks in his 9 relief appearances (4/4-20) with the Mariners this season. He earned his first career Major League win on April 6 at Houston, striking out 3 while giving up 1 hit in 1.0 scoreless inning of work. Altavilla was originally optioned to AAA Tacoma on April 21. Prior to his recall, the 5-foot-11, 200-pound right-hander made 4 relief appearances with the Rainiers, posting a 3.18 ERA (2 ER, 5.2 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks with Tacoma.
The native of McKeesport, PA, made his Major League debut with Seattle last season, posting 15 scoreless appearances (12.1 IP) while striking out 10 and walking 1. He was originally drafted by the Mariners in the 5^th round of the 2014 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Mercyhurst (PA) College. In parts of 4 minor league seasons with Seattle (2014-17), Altavilla is 18-18 with 16 saves and a 3.68 ERA (113 ER, 276.2 IP) with 272 strikeouts and 109 walks in 89 appearances (42 starts).
Weber, 26, was removed from the game during the 4^th inning yesterday with right shoulder tightness. He allowed one run in 3.2 innings against the Blue Jays before exiting the game. He was 2-0 with a 0.85 ERA (3 ER, 31.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts and 4 walks in 6 games (5 starts) with AAA Tacoma this season. At the time of his selection he led the Pacific Coast League in ERA with a mark of 0.85. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander began the season without allowing a run in his first 3 games (2 starts), scattering 6 hits over 13.2 innings pitched with 8 strikeouts and 0 walks during that span. Weber had posted back-to-back quality starts: May 3 at Las Vegas and May 8 vs. New Orleans. He had allowed just 3 extra-base hits this season, holding left-handed batters to a .098 (4x41) average and right-handed batters to a .229 mark (16x70).
He was outrighted to AAA Tacoma on Dec. 2, 2016 after being claimed off waivers from Atlanta on Nov. 2 of last year. He went 1-1 with a 5.45 ERA (22 ER, 36.1 IP) in 16 games (2 starts) with Atlanta last season, striking out 23 and walking 5. In 26 games (5 starts) with AAA Gwinnett in 2016, Weber was 2-3 with a 2.76 ERA (19 ER, 62.0 IP) with 41 strikeouts and 14 walks.
The native of St. Petersburg, FL, was drafted by the Braves in the 22nd round of the 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of St. Petersburg College. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on Sept. 8, 2015 at Philadelphia. In parts of 2 seasons with the Braves, he has compiled a career record of 1-4 with a 5.00 ERA (38 ER, 68.1 IP) with 42 strikeouts and 11 walks in 22 games (8 starts). Over parts of 9 minor league seasons with Atlanta (2009-16) and Seattle (2017), Weber is 35-36 with a 3.64 ERA (271 ER, 669.2 IP) with 481 strikeouts and 110 walks in 209 games (82 starts).
