The Miami Marlins used 37 of their 41 picks in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft to select players from the college ranks, but it was left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers out of Carlsbad High School (NM) whose name went up first on the club's draft board, taken 13^th overall in the first round.
Rogers, a second-cousin of former Marlin Cody Ross, went 11-0 with a 0.33 ERA and 134 strikeouts in 11 starts as a senior. He was followed by 10 consecutive college players. That streak began with Miami's other two selections on the first night of the Draft: University of North Carolina center fielder Brian Miller (Raleigh, NC) in Competitive Balance Round A (36^th overall); and North Carolina State shortstop Joe Dunand (Miami, FL) in the second round (51^st).
A freshman year walk-on at UNC, Miller broke out as a sophomore and junior, leading the Tar Heels in both seasons in batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, and steals. Dunand, a Miami native who attended Gulliver Prep, hit 18 home runs and slugged .632 for the Wolfpack in his junior season. He is the nephew of former Major Leaguer Alex Rodriguez.
All eight of Miami's selections on Day 2 were college players. The group was led by University of Kentucky second baseman Riley Mahan (Cincinnati, OH) in the third round (89^th) and Stanford University right-handed pitcher Colton Hock (Bloomsburg, PA) in the fourth round (119^th).
Mahan led the Wildcats in home runs (15) and RBI (67) this year, while Hock, who set a Cardinal record with 16 saves this season, is one of five finalists for the Stopper of the Year Award. The winner of that award will be announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in Omaha on June 17 at 11 a.m.
The Marlins did not dip back into the high school ranks until their first pick of Day 3, selecting left-handed pitcher Dakota Bennett (Eva, AL) out of Albert P. Brewer High School in the 11^th round (329^th). Bennett went 6-1 with a 0.54 ERA and 144 strikeouts in 12 appearances as a senior, allowing just one extra-base hit, a home run, for the entire season. Also of note, Miami drafted shortstop Demetrius Sims (Ann Arbor, MI) out of Bethune-Cookman University (FL) in the 14^th round (419^th); Sims is the younger brother of former Miami Dolphins' tight end Dion Sims, currently of the Chicago Bears.
