The Miami Marlins today announced that the Club has signed 28 of its 2017 draft picks, including left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers, who was taken 13th overall. The signings were announced by Marlins' Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
Rogers, 19, was taken in the first round out of Carlsbad High School in New Mexico. He was 11-0 with a 0.33 ERA (63.1 ip/3 er) in 11 starts as a senior, striking out 134 batters and walking just 13. As a junior, he went 9-2 with a 0.70 ERA (69.2/37) and 122 strikeouts, leading the Cavemen to a Class 6A state championship. He finished his high school career with a 26-5 record and 0.73 ERA (182.0/19), with 325 strikeouts.
Rogers, who is a second-cousin of former Marlin Cody Ross, will report to the Gulf Coast League Marlins.
The Marlins selected just four high school players with their 41 selections from June 12-14. Miami selected 10 consecutive college players after Rogers, including University of North Carolina center fielder Brian Miller (Raleigh, NC) in Competitive Balance Round A (36th overall); and North Carolina State shortstop Joe Dunand (Miami, FL) in the second round (51st), both of whom are among today's signings.
A freshman year walk-on at UNC, Miller broke out as a sophomore and junior, leading the Tar Heels in both seasons in batting average, runs scored, on-base percentage, and steals. He recently completed his junior season, batting .343 (93x271) in 63 games, with 61 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, and 49 RBI. He was also 24-of-30 in stolen base attempts. Prior to this season, he earned Cape Cod League All-Star honors for Orleans, batting .327 with 21 RBI and 15 steals in 41 games.
Dunand, a Miami native who attended Gulliver Prep, completed his junior year this spring. He batted .287 (60x209) in 61 games, with 42 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, a .632 slugging percentage, and 51 RBI. Prior to the season, he was named to the Cape Cod League All League Team after batting .326 with five homers and 24 RBI in 34 games for Harwich. Dunand is the nephew of former Major Leaguer Alex Rodriguez.
Miller and Dunand will both report to Single-A Greensboro in the South Atlantic League.
