Mets select INF Adeiny Hechavarrĺa; Option INF Dominic Smith

The New York Mets announced today that the club has selected the contract of infielder Adeiny Hechavarría from Syracuse (AAA) of the International League and optioned infielder Dominic Smith to Syracuse. In addition, RHP Drew Smith was transferred to the 60-Day Injured List. Hechavarria will wear #11 and will be available for tonight’s game at Milwaukee.

Hechavarría, 30, who was signed by the Mets to a minor league contract on February 18, has played seven seasons in the majors with the Blue Jays, Marlins, Rays, Pirates and Yankees. According to FanGraphs, his 26 defensive runs saved over the past five seasons (2015-2019) rank sixth among all shortstops.

The 6-0, 195-pounder hit .348 (32-92) with nine doubles, 17 RBI and a .382 OBP in 25 games with Syracuse this season.

Hechavarría hit .254 with 101 doubles, 35 triples, 28 homers and 238 RBI in 811 major league games.

Smith was batting .333 with four RBI in 29 games with New York.
