MLB releases three new player spots during All-Star Week

All-Stars Mike Trout, Javy Baez, Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich featured in new creative

July 8th, 2019

MLB All-Stars Mike Trout, Javy Báez, Cody Bellinger and Christian Yelich are featured in three new spots created by Major League Baseball to celebrate the star players around the Midsummer Classic. The content is a continuation of MLB’s “Let The Kids Play” campaign, which has celebrated the game’s top players showing their personality, individuality, and passion for the sport.

The creative will appear across MLB social, digital and traditional media platforms, during the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on ESPN and the All-Star Game presented by Mastercard on FOX, in-stadium, and also will run globally after All-Star across social, digital and broadcast media. The spots will appear as :60, :30 and :15 versions.

Mike Trout narrates a spot where he talks about his values, inspiration, and family while photos and footage of the Los Angeles Angels outfielder, ranging from his childhood to his MLB career, flash across the screen. Marking the second MLB creative that Trout has appeared in this season, the piece concludes with him saying, “I just wanna play.” The words are a reference to the final line in his earlier MLB content appearance this year when he said, “Just let the kids play.” Watch here.

Chicago Cubs infielder Javy Báez narrates a spot in Spanish, with English subtitles, about the importance of his family, adapting to living in the United States, and paying tribute to his home of Puerto Rico. In addition to old photos, the creative features the Puerto Rican national anthem while video highlights showcase Javy’s magical ability and athleticism including a no-look tag, dodging a ball thrown at him, avoiding tags, and his explosive swing. This is the first MLB spot focused on a Cubs player since the popular two year run of “Bryzzo,” which featured Báez’s teammates Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. Nicknamed “El Mago,” the Magician in Spanish, Báez made a cameo in the 2017 Bryzzo campaign. Watch here.

Featuring a different tone than “Humble” and “Power & Grace,” “Belli vs. Yeli” is a playful spot where Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder and 2018 NL MVP Christian Yelich call their shots in a game of M-V-P. The fictional contest between the two mirrors the real-life competition for 2019 National League MVP between the two All-Stars. The spot concludes with a call out to fans, “Who Ya Got? #BELLIvsYELI.” Watch here.

“Let the Kids Play was a movement to celebrate and embrace the passion of MLB players,” said Barbara McHugh, MLB Senior Vice President, Marketing. “With these spots, we’re continuing that effort by highlighting the unique voices, individual styles of play, and the excitement around these four All-Star starters.”

The Trout and Báez spots were directed by Dex Deboree, a creative renowned for blending sports and culture into entertaining content for brands like Nike, Jordan Brand, and Fitbit. This spot marks the first non-Jordan work for Deboree’s new creative content agency, Falkon.

“Belli vs. Yeli” was produced by Film 47, a commercial and branded entertainment production company formed alongside Peter Berg’s feature film company, Film 44 and non-scripted production company Film 45.
