Nick Ahmed, Zack Greinke and David Peralta win NL Gold Glove Awards

Mike Leake earns AL Gold Glove Award with Mariners

November 4th, 2019

PHOENIX – Arizona Diamondbacks SS Nick Ahmed, LF David Peralta and former D-backs RHP Zack Greinke have been named winners of the 2019 National League Rawlings Gold Glove Award®, as announced by Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc. The award recognizes the best defensive players at their respective positions as voted by Major League Baseball managers and coaches.

Arizona’s 3 Gold Glove Award winners were a franchise record, and marked the first time a NL club boasted 3 outright winners since the Giants in 2012 (Brandon Crawford – SS, Joe Panik – 2B and Buster Posey – C). The Braves had 3 winners in 2018, including Freddie Freeman earning co-honors at first base with the Anthony Rizzo/CHC.

Since 2015, the D-backs lead the Major Leagues with 10 Gold Glove Award winners, ahead of the Royals (9) and Rockies (7).

Ahmed, 29, won his second straight Gold Glove Award after becoming the first shortstop in team history to earn the honor in 2018. He led the Major Leagues with 18 defensive runs saved, ahead of Trevor Story/COL (17) and Javier Báez/CHC (15). Ahmed’s total tied for the most among all infielders with Matt Chapman/OAK (18) and tied for fifth among all non-catchers in the Majors (also: Chapman), trailing OF Victor Robles/WSH (22), OF Lorenzo Cain/MIL (20), OF Aaron Judge/NYY (19) and OF/INF Cody Bellinger/LAD (19).

Additionally, Ahmed set a club record with 1,381.0 innings at shortstop, and his career-high 632 total chances were second most in club history behind Stephen Drew’s 638 in 2007.

Greinke, 36, won his sixth consecutive Gold Glove Award, becoming the third NL pitcher to garner the honor 6 years in a row since the award’s inception in 1959, joining Bob Gibson (1965-73) and Greg Maddux (1990-2002, ’04-08). Overall, Greinke’s 6 Gold Gloves are seventh most in Major League history by a pitcher, and he is 1 of 3 pitchers all-time with 6+ Gold Gloves and All-Star selections, along with Gibson and Maddux. Greinke won the award in each of his 4 seasons with the D-backs, establishing a club record.

Greinke, who qualified for the NL award with 146.0 innings with Arizona, led the NL with 12 double plays turned and ranked second with 26 putouts and 52 total chances, trailing only Joe Musgrove/PIT (30 PO/58 TC in 170.1 IP), and committed just 1 error in his 23 starts with the D-backs (.981 fielding pct.). Despite being traded to the Astros on July 31, Greinke tied for eighth in the NL in defensive runs saved, 2 off leader Max Fried/ATL (6).

Peralta, 32, took home the fielding honor for the first time in his career, and was the fifth D-backs outfielder to win a Gold Glove Award (first in left field), joining Steve Finely (1999-2000), Gerardo Parra (’11, ’13) and A.J. Pollock (’15). Peralta led all NL left fielders with 10 defensive runs saved, 3 more than Hunter Renfroe/SD, and was tied with Michael Brantley/HOU and Mike Tauchman/NYY for the overall lead at the position.

Peralta ranked third among NL left fielders with 201 putouts and 206 assists, and his .990 fielding pct. at that position was the second best of his career (.991 in 2015).

Mike Leake, 31, won his first career American League Gold Glove Award with Seattle. He tied for third in the AL with 3 defensive runs saved, and posted a .966 fielding pct. in 22 starts with the Mariners.

Ahmed, Greinke, Leake and Peralta will have an opportunity for further recognition with the Rawlings Platinum Glove Award fan vote, which allows fans across the country to vote for the best defender in each league. Voting will end on rawlings.com on Thursday, November 7 at 7:59 p.m. Fans can only select 1 player for each league among the 2019 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners to take home the “best of the best” honor.
