SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres announced today that they have extended the contract of manager Andy Green. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
 
"Throughout the past two seasons, Andy has consistently proven to us his leadership abilities and strong character," said Preller. "Andy's knowledge of the game and passion for his players has earned him respect in the clubhouse and throughout the organization. As we continue to build a system that produces winning baseball from top to bottom, I am confident that Andy provides the leadership and stability needed to deliver a championship to San Diego."

Green, 40, made his managerial debut with the Padres in 2016. He joined the Padres after spending the 2015 season as the third base coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, his first season as a Major League coach. In total, he spent his entire five-season professional coaching career in the Diamondbacks' organization serving as manager for the club's Rookie-Level Arizona League affiliate in 2011, manager of the Advanced Rookie-Level Missoula Osprey of the Pioneer League in 2012 and manager of the Double-A Mobile BayBears from 2013-14. Green compiled a 219-189 (.537) record during his time in Arizona's minor league system and earned several accolades, including being named the Southern League Manager of the Year for both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He was also named as the "Best Manager Prospect" in the Southern League by Baseball America both years and guided Missoula to a Pioneer League Championship in 2012.  
 
A native of Lexington, Ky., Green graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in finance and currently ranks as the Wildcats' career record holder in runs scored (199), games (228), hits (227) and at-bats (908). He earned First-Team GTE Academic All-American honors as a senior at Kentucky and earned the Kentucky High School Athlete of the Year award in 1996.
