Phillies acquire Freddy Galvis from Baltimore Orioles

July 30th, 2021

The Phillies have acquired infielder Freddy Galvis and cash considerations from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for right-handed pitcher Tyler Burch, President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Galvis, 31, is hitting .249 with 12 doubles, nine home runs and 26 RBI in 72 games for the Orioles this season. He has made four errors in 248 total chances and his .984 fielding percentage ranks third among all qualified American League shortstops.

Since 2016, Galvis is credited with 19 defensive runs saved at the shortstop position, which ranks 10th among all major league shortstops in that span. Of the 10 shortstops with at least 19 defensive runs saved since 2016, Galvis' 84 home runs in that span rank sixth behind Trevor Story (147 HR), Francisco Lindor (137 HR), Javier Baez (130 HR), Carlos Correra (101 HR) and Paul DeJong (91 HR).

Galvis returns to the Phillies, where he played in 642 games over six seasons from 2012-17. He was originally signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent on July 2, 2006.

Burch, 23, pitched in 23 combined games this season between single-A Clearwater and single-A Jersey Shore. Between both levels he posted a 3.99 ERA with seven saves in 29.1 innings pitched. He was originally signed by the Phillies as a non-drafted free agent on June 12, 2019.
