The Phillies have traded right-hander Joaquin Benoit and cash considerations to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-hander Seth McGarry, Vice President & General Manager Matt Klentak announced today.
McGarry, 23, appeared in 31 games for single-A Bradenton this season and posted a 1.34 ERA (6 ER, 40.1 IP) and 0.84 WHIP (14 BB, 20 H) while holding opponents to a .146 average (137 AB). Selected by Pittsburgh in the eighth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Atlantic University, McGarry has registered a 73.2% ground ball rate this season.
Benoit, signed by the Phillies as a free agent this past offseason, appeared in 44 games and posted a 4.07 ERA (19 ER, 42.0 IP) while averaging 9.21 SO/9.0 IP. Pittsburgh will mark the eighth team Benoit has pitched for in his 16 seasons in the majors.
