The Pittsburgh Pirates today claimed infielder Engelb Vielma off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 23-year-old Vielma hit a combined .229 (95-for-415) with 17 doubles, two triples, 35 RBI and 43 runs scored in 121 games this past season between Chattanooga (Twins' Double-A) and Rochester (Twins' Triple-A).

Vielma was originally signed by Minnesota as a non-drafted free agent on September 8, 2011. Since making his professional debut in 2012, he has recorded a career average of .256 with 53 doubles, 15 triples, two home runs, 149 RBI, 84 stolen bases and 258 runs scored in 543 games in the minors.

He was claimed off waivers by San Francisco from Minnesota on September 14 before later being claimed off waivers by Philadelphia from San Francisco on November 20.
