A’s acquire RHP Homer Bailey from Kansas City

Oakland sends Minor League IF Kevin Merrell to the Royals

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s acquired right-handed pitcher Homer Bailey from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor league infielder Kevin Merrell, the club announced today.

Bailey is 7-6 with a 4.80 ERA and .258 opponents batting average in 18 games, all starts, with Kansas City. He was 4-6 with a 5.90 ERA and .278 opponents batting average over his first 13 starts but is 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA and .213 opponents average in five starts since then. The 33-year-old right-hander spent the first 12 years of his career with Cincinnati before signing a minor league deal with the Royals Feb. 9. He is 74-83 with a 4.58 ERA in 230 career appearances, all starts, in 13 big league seasons.

Merrell was batting .246 with two home runs, 34 RBI and 13 stolen bases in 82 games with Double-A Midland. He was originally selected by the A’s as a supplemental pick following the first round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter is a .277 career hitter with four home runs and 68 RBI in 184 games in three professional seasons.
