September 1st, 2019

NEW YORK, NY. – The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher Paul Blackburn and infielder Franklin Barreto from Triple-A Las Vegas, selected catcher Sean Murphy from Las Vegas, reinstated left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea from the 60-day injured list, and reinstated designated hitter Khris Davis from the paternity list, the club announced today. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s designated infielder Corban Joseph and right-handed pitcher Tanner Anderson for assignment.

Barreto joins the A’s for the third time and is hitting .106 with two home runs and four RBI in 17 games with the A’s. He was on the Opening Day roster in Japan and appeared in one game as a pinch runner before he was sent back to Las Vegas when the regular season resumed. The 23-year-old right-handed hitter was also with the club from June 30 to Aug. 2. Barreto is hitting .295 with 19 home runs and 65 RBI in 98 games with the Aviators and has career highs in runs (88), doubles (29), home runs, RBI, walks (42) and extra base hits (53). He appeared in 47 games at second base, 31 at shortstop, nine at third base, nine in center field and two in left field.

Blackburn also joins Oakland for the third time, but has made just one start, a loss on June 8 at Texas in the day game of the day/night doubleheader when he allowed five runs on five hits in 3.0 innings. He did not pitch during his second stint, which also lasted one day on July 5. The 25-year-old right-hander went 11-3 with a 4.34 ERA in 24 games, including 22 starts, with Las Vegas. He leads the Pacific Coast League in winning percentage (.790) is tied for second in wins, ranks fourth in ERA and seventh in opponents batting average (.265) and innings pitched (132.2).

Davis was batting .221 with 19 home runs and 57 RBI in 110 games when he placed on the paternity list Thursday. He was on the injured list from May 22 to 31 with a left hip/oblique contusion and homered just once over a 44-game span from June 19 to Aug. 20. Davis is 5-for-20 (.250) with two home runs and four RBI over his last six games.

Manaea began the season on the 60-day injured list as he continued his recovery from Sept. 19, 2018 surgery on his left shoulder. He started a rehab assignment with Single-A Stockton July 8 and made three starts before he was transferred to Triple-A Las Vegas July 23. The 27-year-old left-hander made two starts before his rehab assignment was halted on Aug. 2 due to a strained right oblique. Manaea returned to action Aug. 13 and was 3-3 with a 4.71 ERA and .222 opponents batting average in eight rehab starts overall. He struck out 53 batters in 36.1 innings (13.13 per nine innings).

Murphy hit .308 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 31 games with Las Vegas in a season interrupted by two stints on the disabled list. He was out from April 30 to July 24 and Aug. 1 to 20, both time with a strained left knee, and went 7-for-30 (.233) with a home run and RBI in 10 rehab games with the A’s affiliates in the Arizona Rookie League. The 24-year-old right-handed hitter combined for a .293 average in 41 games overall and tossed out 6-of-30 (20.0%) attempted base stealers. Murphy was the A’s third round selection in the 2016 draft and is a .267 hitter with 34 home runs and 129 RBI in 235 games in four seasons as a professional.

Anderson went 0-3 with a 6.04 ERA in five outings, all starts, for Oakland this season. Acquired via trade from Pittsburgh on Nov. 20, 2018, Anderson began the season with Triple-A Las Vegas where he went 9-5 with a 6.00 ERA in 21 appearances, 16 of which were starts. In 96.0 innings pitched for the Aviators, Anderson struck out 59 and walked 41 with a .307 opponents batting average.

Joseph appeared in 11 games with Oakland, hitting .189 (7-f0r-37) with four runs, two doubles, one home run and five RBI. With Triple-A Las Vegas, he hit a career-high .371 with 35 doubles, four triples, 13 home runs and a career-high 73 RBI in 97 games. At the time of his selection to the Oakland roster, he was tied for fifth among all minor leaguers in doubles, second in the Pacific Coast League in hits (142), tied for second in doubles, third in batting, sixth in OPS (1.006) and on-base percentage (.421) and ninth in slugging percentage (.585).
