OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A’s recalled right-handed pitcher James Kaprielian from Triple-A Las Vegas and reinstated catcher Aramis Garcia from the injured list, the club announced today. To clear space on the roster, the A’s optioned right-handed pitcher Jordan Weems and catcher Austin Allen to Las Vegas. Weems and Allen will remain with the A’s on the road trip as part of the taxi squad.

Kaprielian joins the A’s for the first time this year and is scheduled to make his first Major League start tonight at Boston. He was the Opening Day starter for Las Vegas last Thursday and was the losing pitcher in the Aviators 8-1 loss to Sacramento. The 27-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out five in 4.2 innings. Kaprielian made his ML debut with Oakland last year and had two relief appearances over five stints with the A’s, compiling a 7.36 ERA and .267 opponents batting average.

Garcia was on the A’s Opening Day roster and hit .135 with a home run and two RBI in 13 games before he was placed on the 10-day injured list May 4, retroactive to May 2, with viral enteritis. He started 11 games at catcher and tossed out 1-of-4 (25.0%) attempted base stealers. Garcia did not have a rehab assignment.

Weems was recalled on May 2 for his second stint this year and allowed two runs on one hit and two walks in 2.0 innings over two relief appearances. He has a 6.23 ERA in five relief appearances overall.

Allen was recalled on May 4 and started two games at catcher, going 1-for-6 (.167) with a home run and RBI.
