A’s select RHP Wiles from Las Vegas; designate RHP Tapia for assignment

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland Athletics selected right-handed pitcher Collin Wiles from Triple-A Las Vegas and designated right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia for assignment, the club announced today.

Wiles has spent the entire season at Triple-A Las Vegas where he was 9-11 with a 5.40 ERA, .298 opponents batting average and .835 OPS in 26 games, all starts. He struck out 106 and walked just 27 in 143.1 innings, an average of 1.70 walks per nine innings. The 28-year-old right-hander is leading the Pacific Coast League in innings pitched, is tied for the lead in games started, tied for second in wins and tied for eighth in strikeouts. Wiles was originally selected by Texas as a supplemental pick following the first round of the 2012 draft and spent 10 years in the Rangers organization before signing a minor league contract with the A’s on March 10, 2022. He is 46-53 with a 4.57 ERA in 187 games, including 155 starts, in 10 professional seasons. The Kansas native has walked just 195 batters in 873.1 minor league innings, an average of 2.01 per nine innings.

Tapia was recalled from Las Vegas on Friday and pitched in each of the A’s last two games, allowing three runs in three hits and three walks in 2.0 innings. He has an 8.47 ERA, .338 opponents batting average and .971 OPS in 11 relief appearances over five stints with Oakland. Tapia has combined for four saves, a 2.20 ERA, .218 opponents batting average and .628 OPS in 29 relief appearances with the Aviators and Triple-A Omaha.
