A’s sign first-round pick Tyler Soderstrom

5th Round Selection Emanuels and Three Non-Drafted Free Agents Also Ink Deals

OAKLAND, Calif. – ­­­­The Oakland A’s signed catcher Tyler Soderstrom from Turlock High School, their 1st round selection from the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, and right-handed pitcher Stevie Emanuels, their 5th round pick from the University of Washington, the club announced today. Oakland has now signed all five of its selections from the draft. The A’s also signed three non-drafted free agents: right-handed pitcher Garrett Acton (Illinois), catcher Cooper Uhl (Loyola Marymount) and outfielder D.J. Lee (Richmond).

Soderstrom was the Gatorade California Baseball Player of the Year for 2019-20. He played in just five games for Turlock (Calif.) High School this year before the season ended early, but hit .450 with four home runs and a 1.340 OPS in 28 games as a junior. The 18-year-old left-handed hitter had a .373 career average in 82 games for the Bulldogs and was ranked as the No. 7 high school prospect by Baseball America. Soderstrom was rated as the 19th best 2020 draft prospect by milb.com. He has been added to the A’s 60-man Player Pool for the 2020 season and will report to the A’s alternate training site.

Emanuels was a Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American in 2020 after going 3-1 with a 0.79 ERA in four starts for the University of Washington. He struck out 38 in 22.2 innings in his first season as a starter after appearing in 65 games, 64 in relief, over his first two seasons with the Huskies. The 21-year-old right-hander was 13-6 with seven saves, a 2.81 ERA and 135 strikeouts in 121.2 innings in 69 games in three college seasons.

Acton saved six games in six appearances for Illinois this year after leading the nation with 19 saves last year. He did not allow a run in 6.2 innings and finished his two years with the Illini with a 1.82 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 39.2 innings over 36 appearances. The 22-year-old right-hander was a 1st Team NCBWA All-American in 2019 and a 1st Team Academic All-American in 2020.

Uhl batted .361 with a .487 on-base percentage and nine RBI in 16 games for Loyola Marymount in 2020. He hit .254 with a .365 on-base percentage, two home runs and 64 RBI in 164 games in four seasons with the Lions and earned WCC Defensive Player of the Year honors as a sophomore.

Lee was originally selected by the A’s in the 39th round of the 2019 draft out of the University of Richmond. He hit .268 with a .368 on-base percentage in 193 games in four seasons with the Spiders. The left-handed hitter also stole 56 bases.
