Angels acquire INF Franklin Barreto from Oakland

Athletics receive INF Tommy La Stella from Angels

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired infielder Franklin Barreto from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for INF Tommy La Stella. Today’s announcement was made by General Manager Billy Eppler. 

Barreto, 24, has appeared in 15 games for Oakland this season, including one start, eight games as a pinch-runner, three as a pinch-hitter and three as a defensive substitution. His eight pinch running appearances and five runs scored as a pinch runner lead the Majors this season.  

Last season, Barreto hit .295 (110/373) and set minor league career-highs with 29 doubles, 19 home runs and 65 RBI in 98 games with Triple-A Las Vegas. He also ranked ninth in the Pacific Coast League with 88 runs scored and set his minor league bests in walks (42), extra-base hits (53), OPS (.926) and slugging percentage (.552) and was successful in 15 of 16 (93.8%) stolen base attempts.

Barreto made his Major League debut with the A’s on June 24, 2017 vs. Chicago (A.L.) and has appeared in 95 career Major League games (49 starts) for Oakland across the last four seasons, while appearing defensively at second base (57 games) and shortstop (21 games).

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Barreto was originally signed by Toronto as an international free agent in 2012. He was traded by the Blue Jays to Oakland on Nov. 28, 2014 along with RHP Kendall Graveman, INF Brett Lawrie and LHP Sean Nolin in exchange for INF Josh Donaldson. He was named the A’s Top Prospect by Baseball America following the 2015 and 2016 seasons and their number two prospect following the 2017 season.

La Stella, 31, batted .273 (27/99) with 15 runs scored, eight doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI in 28 games for the Angels this season. In his two campaigns with the Angels, he combined to hit .289 (113/391) with 16 doubles, 20 home runs and 58 RBI in 108 games. The Westwood, NJ native has appeared in 504 career Major League games with the Braves (2014), Cubs (2015-18) and Angels (2019-20) and was selected to the A.L. All-Star team in 2019.
