Astros acquire Will Smith from the Braves

Veteran reliever has been stellar in postseason; Houston sends RHP Jake Odorizzi to Atlanta

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have acquired LHP Will Smith from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for RHP Jake Odorizzi. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager James Click.

Smith, 33, has recorded a 4.38 ERA (18ER/37IP) with 41 strikeouts and five saves in 41 appearances with the Braves this season. In 2021, as the Braves closer, he tallied 37 saves in 43 chances with 87 strikeouts in just 68.0 innings of work. In last year’s postseason, Smith was close to perfect, hurling a combined 11.0 scoreless innings in 11 appearances while tallying six saves in six opportunities, helping to lead the Braves to a World Series title.

Additionally, Smith has been outstanding in the postseason for his entire career, posting a 1.47 ERA (3ER/18.1IP) in 20 career playoff appearances with six saves.

During his 10-year career with the Kansas City Royals (2012-13), Milwaukee Brewers (2014-16), San Francisco Giants (2016-19) and Atlanta Braves (2020-22), Smith has recorded a 3.61 ERA (213ER/531.2IP) with 640 strikeouts and 91 saves. Smith was named an All-Star in 2019 and was a part of the 2021 World Series Champion Braves.

Odorizzi, 32, has gone 4-3 with a 3.75 ERA (25ER/60IP) with 46 strikeouts in 12 starts with the Astros this season. During his tenure with the Astros, Odorizzi went 10-10 with a 4.04 ERA with 137 strikeouts in 36 appearances (35 starts). In his 11-year career with the Kansas City Royals (2012), Tampa Bay Rays (2013-17), Minnesota Twins (2018-20) and Houston (2021-22), he has notched a 3.94 ERA (528ER/1207IP) with 1,132 strikeouts and a 72-66 record in 231 appearances (227 starts).
