Cubs recall LHP Rex Brothers

MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Rex Brothers from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. Right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay was optioned to South Bend after last night’s game.

Brothers will make be available for the Cubs tonight when they begin their three-game series at the Milwaukee Brewers.

Brothers, 32, joins the Cubs for the second time this season. He was a member of the club’s Opening Day roster and posted an 11.57 ERA (3 ER/2.1 IP) in two relief outings, fanning five. Brothers was optioned to South Bend on August 6 when clubs were required to reduce their rosters from 30 to 28 players. 

The southpaw is 20-14 with 20 saves and a 3.86 ERA (115 ER/268.1 IP) in 316 major league relief appearances covering eight seasons with the Colorado Rockies (2011-15), Atlanta Braves (2017-18) and Cubs (2020). Brothers signed a minor league contract with Chicago in December of 2019. 

Alzolay, 25, has made four appearances, three starts, for the Cubs this season and has gone 0-1 with a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/12.1 IP). 

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 59 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) and 28 players in South Bend.
