Oakland, CA -- The Texas Rangers announced today that outfielder Joey Gallo has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 24. Outfielder Willie Calhoun has been recalled from Triple-A Nashville to take Gallo’s spot on the active roster and will be active for Thursday night’s game in Oakland.

Gallo underwent surgery on Thursday afternoon to remove a fractured hook of hamate bone from his right wrist. The surgery was performed by Dr. Thomas DiLiberti in Dallas and went as expected. Gallo will begin a rehab program in the next few days and is expected to be sidelined a minimum of four weeks.

Gallo left Tuesday’s game in Seattle after his final at bat in the eighth inning with soreness in the wrist. After having x-rays on Tuesday night and an MRI on Wednesday, Gallo returned to Texas for the examination and subsequent surgery by Dr. DiLiberti.

Gallo is hitting .252 with 22 homers and 49 RBI in 70 games and was selected for his first All-Star Game this season. He was previously in the IL from June 2-25 with a left oblique strain.      

Calhoun is batting .299 with 8 homers and 28 RBI in 40 games at Nashville in 2019. The lefthanded batter is 3-for-11 in four games with the Sounds since being optioned by the Rangers on July 16. He has a .277 average with 5 homers and 13 RBI in 26 games with Texas. Calhoun was recalled from Nashville on May 15 and was on the 10-day injured list from May 22-June 17 with a strained left quadriceps muscle.

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with five players on the 60-day injured list: RHP Luke Farrell, LHP Taylor Hearn, LHP Yohander Méndez, LHP Jeffrey Springs, and RHP Edinson Vólquez.
