Mariners recall RHP Zac Grotz and INF Shed Long from AAA Tacoma

The Mariners active roster is now at 32 players

CHICAGO -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Zac Grotz, RHP, recalled from AAA Tacoma.
  • Shed Long, INF, recalled from AAA Tacoma.

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners active roster is at 32 players.

Grotz (#37) and Long (#39) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (5:05 pm PT) game at the Chicago Cubs.

Grotz, 26, is in his second stint with the Mariners this season (also: July 31-August 23). In 5 relief appearances with the Mariners this season, he is 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA (3 ER, 7.2 IP) with 7 strikeouts and 5 walks. He was selected from Double-A Arkansas on July 31 and made his Major League debut on August 2 at Houston. He earned his first career Major League win on Aug. 13 at Detroit, striking out 3 over 1.2 innings in the Mariners 11-6 victory. He was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma following the Mariners game on August 23. In 2 relief appearances with the Rainiers, he tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. Prior to being selected from Arkansas on July 31, he was 4-4 with a 2.51 ERA (16 ER, 57.1 IP) with 69 strikeouts and 11 walks in 26 games (6 starts) with the Travelers this season.

Grotz signed with Seattle as a minor league free agent on Nov. 7, 2018. He was originally selected by the Houston Astros in the 28th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He has appeared in parts of 4 minor league seasons with Houston (2015), Los Angeles-NL (2016), New York-NL (2018) and Seattle (2019-c). He has appeared parts of 3 seasons in various independent leagues (2016-18), combining for 103 appearances (5 starts).

Long, 24, is in his third stint with the Mariners this season (also: May 10-14 and May 21 – June 14). In 19 games with the Mariners this season, he is batting .232 (16x69) with 9 runs, 7 doubles, 1 home run, 5 RBI, 10 walks and 3 stolen bases. He made his Major League debut on May 11 at Boston and belted his first big league home run on June 12 at Minnesota. The 5-foot-8, 184-pound infielder appeared in 56 games with Triple-A Tacoma this season, batting .274 (62x226) with 38 runs, 7 doubles, 4 triples, 9 home runs, 36 RBI and 20 walks. He had two stints on the minor league 7-day Injured List while with the Rainiers: July 3-11 and July 12-August 30.

Long was acquired by Seattle from New York-AL in exchange for minor league outfielder Josh Stowers on Jan. 21, 2019. He was originally selected by Cincinnati in the 12th round of the 2013 MLB Draft. He has appeared in parts of 7 minor league seasons in the Reds (2013-18) and Mariners (2019-c) organizations.
