Mariners select RHP Zac Grotz from AA Arkansas

Grotz will make his Major League debut with his first appearance.

ARLINGTON, Texas. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has selected right-handed pitcher Zac Grotz from Double-A Arkansas.

Grotz (#37) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (5:05 pm PT) game vs. the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park.

Grotz will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance.

Grotz, 26, has spent the 2019 season with Double-A Arkansas, going 4-4 with a 2.51 ERA (16 ER, 57.1 IP) with 69 strikeouts and 11 walks in 26 games (6 starts). Over his last 10 appearances, Grotz has posted a 1.13 ERA (3 ER, 24.0 IP) with 5 walks and 20 strikeouts. He has made 9 relief appearances of 2.0 innings or more this season. He picked up his first win of the season on May 20, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in relief and allowing only 1 hit with 6 strikeouts. His 2.51 ERA ranks 3rd among all Travelers pitchers (min. 50.0 IP), trailing only Nabil Crismatt (1.94) and Justus Sheffield (1.69).

Grotz signed with Seattle as a minor league free agent on Nov. 7, 2018. He was originally selected by the Houston Astros in the 28th round of the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound right-hander has appeared in 4 minor league seasons with Houston (2015), Los Angeles-NL (2016), New York-NL (2018) and Seattle (2019-c), going 16-14 with a 3.35 ERA (66 ER, 177.1 IP) with 31 walks and 178 strikeouts in 63 minor league games (21 starts). He has appeared parts of 3 seasons in various independent leagues (2016-18), compiling a record of 10-6 with 2.78 ERA (47 ER, 152.1 IP) with 164 strikeouts and 49 walks in 103 games (5 starts).
