Nationals announce roster moves

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington Nationals made the following roster moves on Sunday in conjunction with expanded September rosters. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcements.

  • Returned from rehab assignment and reinstated left-handed pitcher Sean Doolittle from the 10-day Injured List
  • Returned from rehab assignment and reinstated first baseman Ryan Zimmerman from the 10-day Injured List
  • Returned from rehab assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Austin Voth from the 10-day Injured List
  • Returned from rehab assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hellickson from the 60-day Injured List
  • Recalled catcher Raudy Read from Triple-A Fresno
  • Recalled infielder Adrián Sanchez from Double-A Harrisburg
  • Recalled outfielder Andrew Stevenson from Double-A Harrisburg

Doolittle, 32, ranks third in the National League with 28 saves. In 54 games prior to his stint on the Injured List, Doolittle went 6-4 with a 4.33 ERA and 59 strikeouts and 13 walks in 52.0 innings pitched.

Zimmerman, 34, returns to the active roster after missing 36 games with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He appeared in eight rehab games between Double-A Harrisburg and Single-A Potomac, going 10-for-25 (.400) with three doubles, five RBI, five walks and four runs scored. In nine games prior to being placed on the Injured List on July 22nd, Zimmerman was 12-for-36 (.333) with five doubles, four RBI and five runs scored. He hit safely in eight of the nine games.

Voth, 27, went 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA in four Major League starTs before being placed on the Injured List with right bicep tendinitis on July 21. He earned his first win of the season just prior to going on the Injured List, tossing 6.0 innings of four-hit, one run ball on July 16 at Baltimore. In 16 starts between Triple-A Fresno, Double-A Harrisburg and the GCL Nationals in 2019, Voth went 4-6 with a 4.34 ERA, 80 strikeouts and just 17 walks.

Hellickson, 32, was placed on the Injured List on May 20 with a right shoulder strain. In nine games (eight starts) this season, he went 2-3 with a 6.23 ERA. In five rehab outings (four starts) with the GCL Nationals, he posted a 2.16 ERA with 22 strikeouts, two walks and a .175 opponents’ batting average.

Read, 25, hit a career-high 20 home runs and posted and a career-best .546 slugging percentage in 82 games with Triple-A Fresno in 2019. His 20 home runs ranked third among Nationals Minor Leaguers, while his 60 RBI were good for eighth in the organization. Read finished the season hitting .275 with 17 doubles, three triples, 20 home runs, 60 RBI, 17 walks and 52 runs scored.

Sanchez, 29, returns for his eighth Major League assignment of 2019. He went 7-for-29 (.241) with one RBI, one walk and two runs scored across those eight stints. On Aug. 27 vs. Hartford, Sanchez recorded his 1,000th career Minor League hit with a single in the first inning.

Stevenson, 25, will join the Nationals for his fifth Major League assignment of the season. He went 7-for-20 (.350) with one double, three walks and three runs scored in those five stints. In 92 games between Triple-A Fresno and Double-A Harrisburg, Stevenson hit .315 with 21 doubles, eight triples, six homers, 45 RBI, 27 walks, 13 stolen bases and 60 runs scored. His eight triples rank second among Nationals farmhands.
