Orioles set 2020 Opening Day roster

The Orioles today officially set their 30-man roster for Opening Day. The roster includes 16 pitchers, two catchers, seven infielders, and five outfielders. 12 of the 30 players were on the Orioles’ 2019 Opening Day roster. Eight players are donning an Orioles jersey for the first time.

Three players will start the season on the 10-day Injured List, RHP HUNTER HARVEY (retroactive to July 20; right forearm strain), LHP JOHN MEANS (retroactive to July 20; left shoulder fatigue), and RHP DILLON TATE (retroactive to July 20; right elbow contusion), while OF TREY MANCINI (colorectal cancer recovery/treatment) and INF RICHIE MARTIN (right wrist fracture) will begin the season on the 60-day Injured List.

The Orioles also selected the contract of INF PAT VALAIKA and recalled RHP DAVID HESS and OF CEDRIC MULLINS from the Baltimore Alternate Training Site. Additionally, OF DWIGHT SMITH, JR. has been reinstated from the Injured List.

The Orioles roster includes nine different Orioles who have made their first career Opening Day roster: RHP CODY CARROLL, OF AUSTIN HAYS, RHP TRAVIS LAKINS, SR., RHP EVAN PHILLIPS, LHP TANNER SCOTT, OF DJ STEWART, RHP KOHL STEWART, RHP COLE SULSER, and INF ANDREW VELAZQUEZ.

The Orioles open the 2020 campaign tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. ET at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. LHP TOMMY MILONE will make his first career Opening Day start, as well as his first start as a member of the Orioles.

The Orioles active roster will be reduced from 30 to 28 players on August 6 and from 28 to 26 players on August 20 for the remainder of the season and postseason.
