SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres have signed outfielder Brian O’Grady to a Major League contract, Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.
O’Grady, 28, spent the majority of the 2020 season at the Tampa Bay Rays’ alternate training site, making two stints with the Rays from August 4-5 and August 29–September 1. He appeared in two games at the Major League level (one start), going 2-for-5 with a double.
Originally selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the eighth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the Philadelphia, Pa. native was acquired by the Rays in November 2019. Over parts of two Major League seasons between the Reds (2019) and Rays (2020), he has hit .213 (10-for-47) in 30 career games with three doubles, one triple, two home runs and three RBI with a .302 on-base percentage and .447 slugging percentage. In 584 career minor league games, O’Grady has posted a .252 average (484-for-1921) with a .354 OBP, .807 OPS, 108 doubles, 25 triples, 76 home runs, 299 RBI, 300 runs scored and 85 stolen bases. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound outfielder attended Rutgers University (N.J.), where he earned third team All-Conference honors as a senior.
