The Phillies have acquired left-hander Jason Vargas and cash considerations from the New York Mets in exchange for minor league catcher Austin Bossart, the club announced today.

The 36-year-old Vargas went 6-5 with a 4.01 ERA (42 ER, 94.1 IP) over 19 games (18 starts) while limiting opponents to a .228 batting average (81-355) with the Mets this season. He has won each of his last three starts, posting a 3.06 ERA (6 ER, 17.2 IP) and recording 17 strikeouts in that span.

Vargas has gone 98-95 with a 4.26 ERA in 287 career games (266 starts) with the Florida Marlins (2005-06), Mets (2007, 2018-19), Seattle Mariners (2009-12), Los Angeles Angels (2013) and Kansas City Royals (2014-17).

Selected as an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2017, Vargas is one of 10 active left-handers to make more than 250 career starts. Additionally, he has made three career postseason starts, going 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA for the Royals in 2014. The following year, he was a member of Kansas City’s World Series championship team.

Bossart, 26, slashed .195/.303/.335 with seven doubles, seven home runs and 28 RBI in 63 games with double-A Reading this season. He was selected by the Phillies in the 14th round of the June 2015 draft out of the University of Pennsylvania.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Vargas, right-hander Yacksel Ríos was designated for assignment.
