Phillies acquire Sam Coonrod

The Phillies have acquired right-hander Sam Coonrod from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-hander Carson Ragsdale, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced today.

Coonrod, 28, has made 51 career appearances, all for the Giants, after being selected by the club in the fifth round of the June 2014 draft out of Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. In 2019, he appeared in 33 games in relief and posted a 3.58 ERA while holding opponents to a .202/.336/.319 slash line.

Per Statcast data, among all major league pitchers who threw at least 50 four-seam fastballs last season, Coonrod ranked fifth in average velocity at 98.4 miles per hour. Among all pitchers who threw at least 50 sinkers in 2020, Coonrod’s average of 97.6 miles per hour ranked ninth. He made 18 relief appearances for the Giants in 2020 and converted three saves with 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings of work.

Ragsdale was selected by the Phillies in the fourth round of the June 2020 draft out of the University of South Florida. He participated in the 2020 Florida Instructional League.
