Pirates claim LHP Williams Jerez
The Pirates have claimed LHP Williams Jerez (pronounced “her-EHZ”) off waivers from the San Francisco Giants.
The 27-year-old native of the Dominican Republic attended spring training with the Angels before being traded to the Giants on 3/25 in exchange for RHP Chris Stratton.
Jerez spent a majority of the 2019 season with Triple-A Sacramento, where he went 4-4 with two saves, a 3.86 ERA (56.0ip/24er) and 61 strikeouts in 47 relief appearances.
In six games with San Francisco this season, Jerez posted a 2.70 ERA (6.2ip/2er) and picked up his first big league win on 7/18 vs. New York (NL).
Jerez made 17 appearances with the Angels in 2018, making his Major League debut on 8/7 vs. Detroit.
Jerez is expected to join the Pirates in Chicago over the weekend and will be wearing uniform #79.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Kyle Crick (right hand surgery) has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
