Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Ian Gibaut (#63 - pronounced jih-BOH) from Triple-A Nashville. Gibaut takes the active roster spot of right-handed pitcher Pedro Payano, who was optioned to Nashville following Thursday night’s series opener against the Minnesota Twins.

Gibaut, 25, will be seeking his Rangers debut in Friday night’s contest against the Twins. He was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a July 28 trade in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, and then immediately optioned to Nashville. This will be his second career stint in the Major Leagues, as he was with the Rays from July 6-12, making his lone big league appearance on July 12 at Baltimore. He was designated for assignment by Tampa Bay on July 23 while he was on option at Triple-A Durham, and then traded to the Rangers five days later.

Gibaut has combined to go 1-2 with 4 saves, a 5.06 ERA (9 ER/16.0 IP), and 11.8 strikeouts per 9 innings over 17 games/1 start with Charlotte (High-A), Durham (AAA), and Nashville (AAA). He has allowed 5 R-ER over 4 G/3.2 IP with the Sounds since the trade, last appearing on Monday at Sacramento (1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 30 pitches/19 strikes). The Houston native was originally selected by the Rays in the 11th round of the 2015 June draft out of Tulane University. Over his five-year professional career in the minor leagues, Gibaut has a 17-9 record with 35 saves and a 2.46 ERA over 159 games/1 start, posting a 1.170 WHIP figure with 11.2 strikeouts per 9 innings and 0.6 home runs per 9 innings.

Payano has gone 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA over 6 games/4 starts spanning two stints (July 6 and July 23-August 15) with the Rangers this season, his first Major League action.

Following these transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster.
