BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today added right-handed pitcher Yacksel Rios to the active major league roster. To make room, the club optioned infielder Michael Chavis to Triple-A Worcester following last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Rios, 27, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners on Monday in exchange for cash considerations. The right-hander has made 69 major league appearances with the Philadelphia Phillies (2017-19), Pittsburgh Pirates (2019-20), and Mariners (2021), going 5-2 with a 6.47 ERA (52 ER/72.1 IP). Selected by Philadelphia in the 12th round of the 2011 June Draft, he spent parts of nine seasons in the Phillies organization before the Pirates claimed him off waivers on August 3, 2019. Signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a minor league free agent in January, Rios posted a 0.66 ERA (1 ER/13.2 IP) in 12 games with Triple-A Durham this season before being traded to Seattle on June 4. Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, he attended Doctora Conchita Cuevas High School.

Chavis, 25, has appeared in 11 games over three stints with Boston this season. He is 9-for-33 (.273) with one home run, four doubles, seven runs scored, and two RBI, making five starts at second base and two at first base.
