Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

  • Reinstated left-handed pitcher Chris Sale from the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
  • Returned right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes from his injury rehab assignment with Double-A Portland and reinstated him from the COVID-19 Related Injured List.
  • Optioned right-handed pitcher Ryan Brasier to Triple-A Worcester.
  • Designated right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz for assignment.

Sale, 32, was placed on the COVID-19 Related Injured List on September 10. The left-hander returned from the 60-Day Injured List on August 14 and has since made five starts, going 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA (7 ER/25.0 IP), 30 strikeouts, and six walks. In 89 starts with the Red Sox (2017-19, ’21), he is 38-23 with a 3.06 ERA (185 ER/544.2 IP) and 0.99 WHIP.

Barnes, 31, was placed on the COVID-19 Related Injured List on August 30. The right-hander made one rehab appearance with Worcester and one with Portland, totaling 2.0 innings with three strikeouts, zero walks, two hits, and two runs allowed. He has appeared in 54 games with the Red Sox this season, going 6-5 with 24 saves, a 3.81 ERA (21 ER/49.2 IP), a 1.07 WHIP, a .202 opponent batting average, and 14.13 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (78 strikeouts).

Brasier, 34, missed the Red Sox’ first 134 games of the season on the injured list. Since being reinstated on September 1, the right-hander has appeared in five games with Boston, allowing two earned runs in 4.1 innings with one strikeout, two walks, and nine hits allowed.

Feliz, 28, appeared in four games with Boston, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing two runs with five strikeouts, one walk, and four hits allowed. He also pitched in nine games with the Cincinnati Reds this season, prior to joining the Red Sox.
