Red Sox announce roster moves

September 11th, 2020

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor was placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 8) with left shoulder tendinitis.
  • Right-handed pitcher Domingo Tapia was selected to the major league roster from the Alternate Training Site. He will wear number 66.
  • To make room for Tapia on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer was transferred to the 45-day injured list.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Taylor, 27, began the season on the injured list and missed the Red Sox’ first 22 games. In eight appearances, the left-hander is 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA (8 ER/7.1 IP) and a .233 opponent batting average. Acquired from the Diamondbacks on May 15, 2018, Taylor made his major league debut with Boston in 2019 and pitched in 52 games as a rookie, posting a 3.04 ERA (16 ER/47.1 IP) with 11.79 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Tapia, 29, is making his first career appearance on an active major league roster. Signed by Boston as a minor league free agent prior to the 2019 season, the right-hander has made 242 minor league appearances (102 starts) in the Mets (2010-16), Reds (2017-18), and Red Sox (2019) organizations, going 38-50 with a 4.14 ERA (315 ER/685.0 IP). A native of the Dominican Republic, Tapia worked primarily as a starter from 2010-14, but 138 of his 153 outings since the start of 2015 have come in relief.

Brewer, 27, was placed on the 10-day injured list on September 3 (retroactive to September 1) with a right third finger strain. The right-hander is 0-3 with a 5.61 ERA (16 ER/25.2 IP) in 11 appearances for Boston this season, including the first four starts of his major league career. In 80 career major league outings with the San Diego Padres (2018) and Red Sox (2019-20), Brewer has posted a 4.70 ERA (47 ER/90.0 IP) with 87 strikeouts.
