BOSTON, MA – Throughout the day today, Wednesday, November 11, the Red Sox will commemorate Veterans Day and recognize those who have served in the United States Armed Forces with the broadcast of a special Veterans Day “televent” airing on WCVB Channel 5 to raise funds for Home Base, a Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital program dedicated to treating the invisible wounds for Veterans of all eras, service members, and military families.
For the sixth year in a row, Home Base will air a broadcast special on WCVB Channel 5 highlighting service members and their families struggling with the invisible wounds. The televent began at 6 a.m. this morning and will run through 8 p.m. tonight. The day-long broadcast includes live cut-ins throughout the day featuring special guests and inspiring stories of hope and recovery. The broadcast is supported by a live phone bank and online donations. Viewers can donate by calling 617-726-2200, or visiting www.homebase.org/televent.
The Home Base program was created in 2009 by Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner who was inspired by a visit with Veterans at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after celebrating the Red Sox’ 2007 World Series Championship at the White House. The program is now in its 11th year of helping at-risk veterans and military families free of cost.
